CHAPTER 32

Oh my god! I can’t believe it. I was staring at the piece of paper, unable to move. What a damn mess.

My fingers were still shaking as I dialed the phone.

“What’s up?”

“I got the results of the DNA I had tested and Paul Bennett is Sam’s father.”

“I’m speechless,” Annie said. “Though you thought it might be a possibility.”

“But I didn’t really believe it. How is Sam going to react? And what about the mother finding out her husband cheated on her?”

“Listen, it’s not your responsibility to tell Sam or her mother, it’s Bennett’s.”

“Shit! I have to confront him. I better not bring my gun because I might shoot him.”

“I didn’t hear that just in case he winds up dead,” Annie said jokingly.

“That gives him a damn good motive for killing Maria.”

“Don’t forget the boyfriend. He had a motive as well.”

“That’s true.”

“The thought of confronting him is making me ill.”

“Do it sooner rather than later. No reason to wait.”

I looked at my watch. It was 4:30 p.m. If I rushed, I could be at Bennett’s office by five o’clock. I was hoping he’d still be there.

“I’ll let you know what happens.”

As soon as I got out of the Uber, I made a mad dash to the elevator.

“Paul Bennett, please. I don’t have an appointment. Tell him it’s Maddie Landon and that it’s urgent.”

Five minutes later, he was walking toward me and he didn’t look too happy. He took me back to his office and closed the door. I practically shoved the DNA results in his face. He looked stunned.

“How did you get this?”

“Really! Is that your first thought? Not what a low life you are. Once you knew she was pregnant with your baby, you planned the whole thing. First, getting her to put the baby up for adoption, then steering her to your friend who has never handled an adoption in his life so you could adopt your own baby.”

“I didn’t know it was my baby, not at first. I found out later, after we adopted Sam.”

“You think that lets you off the hook? You cheated on your wife, you led her to believe she was adopting a stranger’s baby, not yours, and just because you didn’t know it was yours from the beginning, you think that makes everything alright? I’m giving you two days to tell your wife and Sam and if you don’t, I will.”

“I didn’t force Maria to put Sam up for adoption. She wanted to,” he said.

“Yeah, because you wouldn’t take responsibility for the baby. All you cared about was adopting that baby. You didn’t care about Maria and you certainly didn’t think about your wife. Two days,” I said, and I walked out of his office. My heart was beating so fast I thought my chest was going to split open.
